To Kill a Mockingbird was one of the best books I have ever read. It taught me about the hardships of colored people who faced discrimination during the 1060's. African Americans didn’t have equal rights. They had to use separate restrooms, ride in the back of busses, eat in separate restaurants, or drink in the same water fountains, and faced several other discriminations. It was incredible to read about the courage Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr. had to stand up for what was right. It taught me how a few people can make such a big difference in the world.
This novel has been banned due to its racial themes. It was temporarily banned in Eden Valley, Minnesota in 1977. It was also challenged at the Warren, Ind. Township schools in 1981, because the book "represents institutionalized racism under the guise of 'good literature'." The book was also banned from the Lindale; Tex. advanced placement English reading list in 1996 because the book "conflicted with the values of the community."
Although this book has racial themes and issues people might not like, every teen and adult should read it. I learned a lot about important history events that weren’t as clear when I learned them in school. This book was sad but very realistic and showed me how different life would be if it wasn’t for Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr. standing up for what they believed in. To Kill a Mockingbird should never be banned because important pieces of history would be lost.
Question to discuss: What would life be like now, if Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr. didn’t stand up for equality for everyone?
